The Art of Storytelling

and the spoken word are the most dominant forms of communication around the world. A gift that keeps us together.

Our lives are strongly influenced by stories.  Film, theatre TV and books, they lay down patterns that we seek out and interpret as we try to make sense of our existence. Human thoughts, feelings and emotions are best expressed in stories and poetry prose.  Bullet points and flow chart won't do.

Long before people wrote things down stories and information were passed from generation to generation by the spoken word.  Most of the stories we have today are thanks to those who traveled the lands gathering and recounting vital information about the culture and history of a people.

Authentic storytelling evolved as a tool that brought communities together, creating meaning to our experiences and help  to get a message across. The tradition grew and evolved as some discovered they had a talent for storytelling

Mass literacy is a relatively new phenomenon

There is much being made of the worrying fall in interest in reading. It's worth remembering that mass literacy is a relatively new phenomenon. The rise of the written word was about distance; physical and temporal.   The further a piece of information travels by word-of- mouth the more it can be subject to distortion.  To ensure that important information would travel around the world or across time unadulterated it was necessary to develop a physical representation of the sounds we made. So patterns and designs were created and then evolved into the characters.  As this form of communication spread more and more people used it to share their thoughts with others in letters and books.  Thus knowledge spread and the wisdom and heritage of a people could be preserved for the benefit of subsequent generations.

Storytelling is about that magical thing thing that happens when you bring the written and the spoken word together.
